When to Repair vs Replace Your Air Conditioner

The 5000 rule and other professional tips to decide if it's worth fixing that old air conditioning unit or investing in a new one.

When to Repair vs Replace Your Air Conditioner

The Summer Dilemma: Fix It or Trash It?

When your air conditioner breaks down in the middle of July, the decision to repair it or buy a new one can be stressful. While a repair is usually cheaper in the short term, continuing to pump money into an obsolete unit that consumes too much electricity or breaks down every two years is a poor financial decision. To help you make the right choice, industry experts use several metrics. Here we explain the most important ones so you don't throw your money away.

    The 5000 Rule: Simple Math

This is the golden rule of HVAC technicians. To use it, simply multiply the age of your unit (in years) by the estimated repair cost. If the result is over 5000, it makes more financial sense to replace the unit. If it is under 5000, the repair is justified.

    • Example 1: Your unit is 10 years old and the repair costs €600. (10 x 600 = 6000). The result is greater than 5000. Recommendation: Replace.
    • Example 2: Your unit is 4 years old and the repair costs €300. (4 x 300 = 1200). The result is much lower than 5000. Recommendation: Repair.

    The R22 (Freon) Gas Problem

If your air conditioner is over 10-15 years old, it highly likely uses R22 refrigerant gas. This gas has been banned throughout the European Union due to its destructive effect on the ozone layer. If your old unit has a gas leak or a compressor failure, it legally cannot be recharged with R22. Adapting the unit to a modern gas (like R32) is expensive and rarely works well. In this scenario, the only viable option is a new air conditioning installation in Mijas or your local area.

    Energy Efficiency and Payback

Technology has advanced in leaps and bounds. A modern Inverter unit with an A+++ rating consumes up to 50% less electricity than a 10-year-old ON/OFF unit. If your summer electricity bill is €200 a month, a new unit could save you €100 monthly. Over the years, the new air conditioner will literally pay for itself through savings on your electricity bill, something your old unit will never do. In addition, new units are much more environmentally friendly.

    The 50% Cost Rule

Another simple way to look at it: if the repair quote exceeds 50% of the cost of buying and installing an equivalent new unit (with its new 3 to 5-year warranty), do not repair it. You are taking on too much risk for a machine that has already passed half of its expected lifespan and will likely suffer another breakdown soon.

    Warranties and Peace of Mind

When you repair an old unit, you generally only get a warranty on the specific part that was replaced. If a month later a different part breaks, you'll have to pay again. By replacing the entire unit with a new one, you get a comprehensive manufacturer's warranty (usually between 3 and 5 years) and an installation warranty. This means years of peace of mind with no unexpected bills during the hot Costa del Sol summers.
