Why is My AC Making Strange Noises?
Buzzing, hissing, or banging: discover what your unit's noises mean and when to call a technician.

When the Silence Breaks: Listen to Your Equipment
Modern air conditioning systems, especially those equipped with Inverter technology, are designed to be incredibly quiet, almost imperceptible, so as not to interrupt your rest or daily activities. Therefore, when your unit starts making strange noises you've never heard before, it is an unmistakable sign that something is wrong inside. Ignoring these sounds hoping they will "fix themselves" is the fastest way to turn a minor €100 repair into the need to buy a new €2000 unit. Here we explain what each noise means and when you should seriously worry.
1. Hissing or High-Pitched Whistling (Like a pressure cooker)
If you hear a high-pitched whistling or a constant "hissing" sound coming from the indoor or outdoor unit, it is highly likely you have a high-pressure refrigerant gas leak. The gas is escaping through a pinhole in the copper pipes or a faulty valve. This is a serious problem that will not only cause the unit to stop cooling quickly, but can irreversibly damage the compressor due to lack of lubrication. Turn off the unit immediately and call a qualified professional.
2. Loud Electrical Buzzing ("Bzzzzz")
A loud, constant electrical buzzing, especially coming from the outdoor unit (the motor), usually indicates a problem with the electrical components. The most common culprit is a faulty or burnt-out start capacitor, or a failing relay. The compressor is trying to start but isn't receiving the necessary power to overcome inertia. If you hear this, request an air conditioning repair in Mijas or your local area before the motor burns out from the continuous strain and overheating.
3. Metallic Banging or Rattling ("Clack-clack-clack")
Banging or rattling sounds are usually mechanical. In the outdoor unit, it can mean that a fan blade is loose or hitting against a branch or debris that has fallen inside the casing. It can also indicate that the compressor's rubber anti-vibration mounts have broken over the years, causing the motor to bang violently against the metal chassis. In the indoor unit, a rattling noise can mean the cylindrical turbine is unbalanced, broken, or blocked by hardened dirt.
4. Bubbling Water Sound or Constant Dripping
Hearing water bubbling softly when the unit is off can be the sound of refrigerant gas moving through the circuit and equalizing pressures, which is sometimes normal. However, if you hear a loud gurgling sound when it is on, it could indicate air in the refrigerant lines. On the other hand, if you hear a constant dripping or water falling inside the indoor unit (the split), it means the condensation tray is full and the drain pipe is clogged. If you don't act quickly, water will soon start running down your wall, ruining the paint, plaster, or wooden floor.
5. High-Pitched Squealing on Startup
A loud, high-pitched squeal (similar to an old car's engine belt) when turning on the machine usually indicates problems with the fan motor bearings or that the belt (in older or commercial ducted systems) is worn and slipping. This sound usually disappears after a few minutes, but it is a warning. It requires professional lubrication or bearing replacement before the fan seizes completely, which would cause the machine to freeze.
